Laser Hair Removal Tacoma
Laser hair removal is one of the fastest growing services we offer. Laser hair removal uses pulses of laser light to destroy the hair follicle. Once destroyed, further hair growth is impossible.
A general rule is that dark objects absorb light; and light is reflected by water and light objects. Laser energy can also be absorbed by melanin (the dark part) in the hair. The laser’s unique design makes this possible, as it targets the melanin in the hair follicle without heating any other part of the skin. Only the follicle is damaged, which prohibits additional hair growth.
Permanent laser hair removal in Tacoma
At HM Advanced skin, we are proud to offer laser hair removal unlike any other!
The Alexandrite was the most effective light used for hair removal in the past. While this is true, there are limitations in treating darker skin. This is the case because contrast between the skin’s pigment and the hair follicle is necessary.
This means that this type of laser hair removal treatment wasn’t as effective for all skin types. To solve this issue, The Motus AX was developed. This is the first high-speed Alexandrite laser that allows darker skin pigments to receive an effective removal treatment. The innovative breakthrough is possible because of the Moveo technology used, which includes a handpiece capable of delivering fast, effective energy for destroying the hair in a completely painless way and free from unwanted side effects.

How does laser hair removal work?
During the laser hair removal process, the light emitted by the laser will be absorbed by the hair’s pigment. The energy from the light is changed to heat, which causes damage to the tube-shaped sacs in the skin, which are the hair follicles. The damage caused prevents or delays additional hair growth in the future.
What kind of body hair can be removed with lasers?
The most common treatment locations for laser hair removal include the bikini line, chin, upper lip, armpits, and legs. While this is true, it’s also possible to eliminate unwanted hair in almost any location besides the eyelid or nearby areas. If you have tattoos, these areas cannot be treated, either.
Laser vs electrolysis vs waxing
Each hair removal method is effective, but it’s up to you to determine what option is best for you.
Laser hair removal damages hair follicles, reducing or eliminating hair growth. While it’s effective, it doesn’t eliminate unwanted hair forever. However, when hair grows back, it is lighter in color and finer than before. While it does last longer than other hair removal methods, you do need to schedule several treatments to achieve optimal results, along with ongoing maintenance treatments.
While electrolysis is growing in popularity, it’s not as common as laser hair removal. The FDA has recognized electrolysis as a permanent hair removal solution. Also, electrolysis is more painful than laser hair removal because every follicle must be treated by inserting a needle into the skin then sending an electrical current through the needle to damage the follicle. We recommend only doing electrolysis on smaller areas as it is a time-consuming and slightly uncomfortable treatment. Electrolysis however is the only FDA-approved permanent hair removal procedure.
Waxing is the most affordable hair removal method if you don’t mind ongoing maintenance.
How to prepare
You should do several things to prepare for your laser hair removal treatment. These include:
- Stop waxing and plucking
- Shave 24 to 48 hours before your scheduled treatment
- Avoid tanning
- Be careful with some medications
Please note that should you choose to do electrolysis, we require you to NOT shave your hair before your treatment as we do need to be able to grab the hair with tweezers to be able to treat it.
What to expect after treatment
Several days after your laser hair removal treatment, you may see what looks like new hair growing in the treated areas. While this may seem weird, it’s a sign the treatment is working.
You may also notice some redness and bumps in the treated areas. It is best to cleanse the area gently and avoid using deodorant, moisturizer, lotion, and make up the first 24 hours after treatment. You can exfoliate to speed up the hair shedding, and it’s recommended that you avoid sun exposure on the treated area.
How many laser treatments do I need?
Usually, 8 to 10 (12 for dark skin tones) treatments are necessary for the best results.
How permanent is laser hair removal?
While laser hair removal does not guarantee permanent results, most people experience remarkable results for several years.
How much does laser hair removal cost?
The cost for laser hair removal depends on the area treated and how many sessions are required. We offer various payment and package plans to fit most people’s budgets. Our esthetician will be happy to discuss all options with you at your consultation appointment.
